The parliamentary group European United Left/Nordic Green Left
(Gue/Ngl) organized on Monday a work journey in Brussels on the
recognition of the Palestinian State. According to "Prensa Latina", the
meeting had the participation of Bassam Salhi, Secretary General of the
communist Palestine People’s Party (PPP) and member of the Palestinian
Legislative Council. Also participated in the meeting MK Muhammad
Barakeh, chairman of Hadash (Democratic Front for Peace and Equality –
Communist Party of Israel) and member of the Knesset and Leila Shahid,
general delegate of Palestine.
Just returned from his recent stay in Gaza, Manuel Pineda, member of the
United Left, participated in the seminar. Pineda talked about his worry
over the "accomplice silence" of the western media on the present
situation in Gaza. He stressed his concern that "since the cease fire at
least four peasants have been assassinated in Gaza, dozens of persons
wounded and several fishermen arrested for trying to make a living."
For his part, speaker of International Policy of United Left, Willy
Meyer, expressed that "the unsustainable situation in Palestine is also
the European Union responsibility." "Instead of looking the other way,
it should demand from Israel something so elementary as complying with
international law and human rights, freezing any relations and trade
exchange until this happens," he added.
In the work meeting other topics were approached, such as those that
affect the present reality of Palestine including the result of
elections in Israel or the ceasefire in Gaza. According to the
parliamentary group, it was concluded pointing to the need that from the
international community it is firmly supported the creation of the
Palestine State as part of the solution to the conflict
